Le Corbusier laid it out on a grid of 47 sectors — each with its own market, park and green belt, stitched together by wide axial roads. The city runs the governments of two states — twin secretariats, the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Raj Bhavan sit inside one sector plan — alongside Panjab University (1882), PGIMER and a hospital belt that draws patients from across the region. The Capitol Complex, Le Corbusier’s concrete capitol with the Open Hand monument, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2016.
