A 1727 grid city that turned pink for a prince — and never changed back.
Jaipur was planned in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II with the astronomer Vidyadhar Bhattacharya — a grid of bazaars, gateways and courtyards against the Aravalli edge, one of medieval India’s first planned cities. In 1876 the whole old town was painted terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, and the Pink City stuck. Inside the walls, Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar (a UNESCO-listed observatory) sit a walk apart; outside them, bazaars still trade by trade — jewellery in Johari, bangles in Tripolia, prints in Bapu.
Today Jaipur is Rajasthan’s capital (since 1949), a UNESCO World Heritage City (2019) and the state’s economic engine: gems and jewellery, block-printed textiles, handicrafts and a growing IT belt at Mahindra World City. Jaipur Junction (JP) sits on the Delhi–Mumbai main line, Jaipur International (JAI) flies the metros, and NH-48 pulls weekend traffic to Ajmer, Pushkar and Ranthambore.
