Prayagraj, called Allahabad until 2018, stands where the Ganga and Yamuna meet — the Sangam, with the Saraswati believed to join them under the silt. Akbar raised the fort here in 1583, and the old city behind its walls still runs on the bazaar lanes of Katra, Chowk and Daraganj, boats at first light and the ghats that fill for the Magh Mela every January.
It is a judicial and administrative capital (Allahabad High Court, sitting since 1866, and the state public service commission), an education heavyweight (University of Allahabad, 1887, long called the Oxford of the East) and the home of Anand Bhavan, the Nehru family house. The Kumbh cycle at the Sangam, the junction on the Delhi–Howrah main line, Bamrauli airport (IXD) and the NH-19 corridor keep the rest moving — Kanpur is ~200 km west, Varanasi ~125 km east.
