Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand, carried on the red-soil Chotanagpur plateau at 650 metres — cooler than the plains and ringed by forest edges. Born as a colonial hill-station-of-sorts and the centre of the tribal Jharkhand movement, it became a state capital in 2000 and the political spine of India’s mineral country.
