Yamunanagar–Jagadhri is a twin city in eastern Haryana, right on the Yamuna which here forms the state border with Uttar Pradesh. The older town is Jagadhri, famous for brass and stainless-steel utensils and one of north India's biggest furniture markets; Yamunanagar itself grew around plywood and paper factories — poplar plantations in the region feed the mills — plus sugar-machinery works, paper machinery and one of India's largest railway carriage-and-wagon repair workshops.
The Tajewala headworks, north of the city, is where the Yamuna canal is diverted — the old patthar (canal road) on either side still makes a green, flat walk between the fields. The Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Station lights the region, and sugarcane, wheat and rice drive the surrounding farms. The railway bridge over the Yamuna — the 1,042 m Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Bridge — connects Yamuna Nagar–Jagadhri (YJUD) straight to Saharanpur on the Amritsar–Kolkata main line.
